The Chalok Ban Khao strip is host to a variety of eateries and street stalls, in addition to resort restaurants, so you will never have to go far for food.
Whether you are looking for a full English fry up, seafood BBQ, a spicy Som Tam salad, a sticky chocolate pudding or a plump steak, all are available.
Thai cuisine represents the best value, with simple fried rice or noodle dishes available for around 50 baht. Those that want to indulge in some Western favourites will not be disappointed as there are accomplished European chefs serving authentic fare at reasonable rates.
Recommendations change from season-to-season so ask around when in town, but our choices below represents some of the most consistent Chalok Baan Kao restaurants over the past few years.
Recommended Chalok Baan Kao Restaurants
Another good recommendation for classic Thai cuisine and seafood is the restaurant at Viewpoint Resort. The beach-side restaurant, which actually goes out over the water at high tide, offers great food at reasonable prices with stunning views. The sweet and sour fish and prawn is a must for seafood lovers.
New Heaven Resort
Between Chalok Ban Khao and Shark Bay (Ao Thien Og) is New Heaven Resort with their magical, hillside restaurant. The restaurant is one huge deck perched on the top of the hill with amazing views across the bay. Low tables with Thai cushions, ambient candle lighting and great food make this a definite place to try for dinner. They have a good range of breakfast options too and set menus with authentic Thai cuisine including regional specialities which are difficult to find elsewhere. A top choice which rarely disappoints.
If you fancy something different, Miramar has delicious authentic Spanish delicacies like Tapas and paella, all of which can be washed down with a jug of Sangria. They are situated on top of the hill with magnificent vistas. A shuttle bus is available to get you up the hill, but you can walk the dinner off on the way down!
Recommended Chalok Baan Kao Bars
One of the coolest bars in the area is the Babaloo Bar, which is built on different levels with funky chill out areas and lounges. The bar puts on monthly parties with DJs playing ambient sounds to trance music while the fire jugglers twirl their pois on the beach.
Located at Buddha View Resort, Buddha Bar is popular as a relaxed backpacker hang out on the beach. You can catch live music or open mic nights most of the week while enjoying cheap cocktails, shots and beers. The music varies from funk, to hip hop and Indie.
